Music

At St John Fisher Catholic College, we believe that music is a form of communication that can influence the way pupils feel, think and act. Performance of all kinds of music enables pupils to grow in confidence and increase their self-esteem.

Music allows pupils to display their feelings thus enabling personal expression and reflection. In today’s modern world, we are surrounded by music and it is important that pupils gain a valuable understanding of what is going on around them.

Pupils at St. John Fisher Catholic College are given the opportunity to take part in many different forms of music-making, both individually and in groups and ensembles, helping to develop a sense of identity and togetherness.

The Music Department has two members of staff; Mrs J Golds (Director of Learning for Music) and Miss L Lyons who are both passionate about Music and encourage all pupils to be as active as possible in the Music Department.

The facilities in the Music Department are of a very high standard. It is made up of one large classroom, a mobile classroom and 3 practice rooms. The large classroom is equipped with an up-to-date computer suite of 16 machines and an interactive whiteboard which allows pupils of all ages to use computer music throughout their education.

The mobile classroom has a projector and boasts an impressive collection of keyboards and percussion instruments (both traditional and from around the world) which can be used in all stages of education.

Outside of classroom teaching, the Music Department runs a wide range of extra-curricular ensembles including Wind Band, Orchestra, Choir, Year Seven Singing Group, Noyz for Boyz, Swing Band, Recorder Group, Rock school Wednesday, Ceilidh Band and many others that rehearse on an ad hoc basis.

We have regular school concerts in which all of the extra-curricular ensembles have the opportunity to perform. We also run school shows and musicals in which all pupils can take part.

Pupils are also offered the opportunity to have instrumental lessons during school time with a team of experienced instrumental teachers from Staffordshire Performing Arts. These instruments include Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone, Guitar, Trumpet, Trombone and all the instruments from the Orchestral String Family.
