Business Studies

We have chosen to follow the new Edexcel Syllabus for both GCSE and GCE in order to focus the department on a common examination board.

GCSE

Is designed along a modular structure with 2 Units examined externally and a controlled assessment task (similar to coursework) is also part of the final grading.  We can choose to examine Units in either Year 10 or Year 11 and traditionally we opt to take the first module at the end of Year 10.

The course is focused on developing a business from initial start up ideas to the more conventional areas of marketing, finance, production and the impact of external factors such as the current economic climate and government action.

The modules are:

  • Unit 1 - Introduction to Small Business
  • Unit 2 - Investigating Small Business
  • Unit 3 - Building a Business

GCE

This new specification is designed around an “enterprise” theme to encourage students to think around a new business idea and develop market research and business planning. We are fortunate to have access to up to date resources developed by Ian Marcouse who is one of the chief examiners, and also runs A- Z Training.

Students will study the impact of the current economic climate on businesses along with specialist areas of Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Business Strategy and Production. This is the only board with a dedicated International Business option which allows the students to understand the potential impact of the growth of the Global Market on the UK economy.

The examinations are modular with the first unit being taken at the start of the Spring Term

The modules are:

  • Unit 1 - Developing New Business Ideas
  • Unit 2a - Managing the Business
  • Unit 3 - International Business
  • Unit 4a - Making Business Decisions

Unit 1 and Unit 2a are taken in the first year and Unit 3 and 4a are taken in the final year

We encourage students to take a keen interest in the news and to read as much up to date material as possible

Students will be required to participate in a wide range of activities

  • Discussions
  • Group analysis of case studies
  • Presentations
  • Independent research
